iPhone 5 production begins in Shanghai, says report

iPhone 5 production begins in Shanghai, says report
iPhone 5 production reports are rolling in from Asia with more frequency. This time, a Taipei-based report claims that Pegatron has started making the next iPhone. The Taiwan-based manufacturer has begun production of a new version of the iPhone at its factory in Shanghai, according to Digitimes, citing "industry sources in Taiwan." This follows a week-earlier report claiming basically the same thing -- though that report did not specify the manufacturer. That earlier report did get specific about the phone itself, however, saying the back of the new iPhone has both glass and aluminum.By comparison, the iPhone 4S sports glass coverings on the front and back. The iPhone 5's most anticipated feature is a larger 4-inch class Retina display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.Previous iPhones have had a 3.5-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio.Digitimes also mentioned that Pegatron will be a second production source for the "new version of the iPad."Foxconn has been the primary manufacturer of Apple's iPad and is also expected to make the iPhone 5. iPhone 5 preorders back online at Apple

iPhone 5 preorders back online at Apple
Well, that didn't last long. Earlier today, the Associated Press reported that Apple had stopped taking orders for the iPhone 5 because of a crush of demand that exhausted the initial product inventory. But the site was back in business Friday morning, the one caveat being the two-per-customer limit.Apple's site now estimates the wait-time for delivery to be two weeks instead of the original date of September 21. When Apple opened up iPhone 5 preordering at midnight, the first batch of iPhone 5 models sold out within an hour, stretching delivery times to as long as three weeks. Whatever the initial customer frustration, the intense early interest signals a big fall hit for Apple. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster noted an analysis of Twitter traffic by Investing Analytics, which said tweets surrounding the iPhone 5 on launch day were up 460 percent compared with tweets about the iPhone 4S when it debuted -- and 73 percent of the iPhone tweets were positive compared with 51 percent when the iPhone 4S launched.Parsing the data, Munster reaffirmed his belief that Apple will meet his 6 million to 10 million iPhone 5 unit sales estimate for the rest of this month. He also expects Apple to sell 49 million units in the fourth quarter overall.

iPhone 5 preorder delivery pushed back 3 to 4 weeks

iPhone 5 preorder delivery pushed back 3 to 4 weeks
The new shipping estimates come after Apple announced yesterday that the iPhone 5 logged more than 2 million preorders in its first 24 hours, more than doubling the tally of the iPhone 4S last year. Apple's next-generation smartphone is benefiting from pent-up demand among consumers seeking a new design, bigger display, and a 4G LTE connection. While a majority of the orders are expected to be fulfilled on September 21, both Apple and its partner carriers had previously pushed back the shipment dates by a couple of weeks. The iPhone 5 is also proving to be a hit among reviewers, including CNET's Scott Stein, who praised the addition of 4G LTE and the larger screen. "The iPhone 5 has them, plus a new processor, plus a new design, plus iOS 6, plus a lot more. It's the best iPhone that's been made," Stein wrote. iPhone 5 may launch in October due to Qualcomm supply issues

iPhone 5 may launch in October due to Qualcomm supply issues
According to an industry note from investment banking firm Piper Jaffray, Apple will most likely continue its trend of October launches and wait until this fall to release the iPhone 5.This later release date is said to be due to a supply issue with Qualcomm's 28-nanometer modem chip, which will enable the new iPhone to be LTE-compatible."We expect the iPhone 5 to not only include a revolutionary newly designed body," read the report, "but also support LTE and utilize the Qualcomm 28nm baseband modem."Yesterday, Reuters reported that Qualcomm cannot meet demands because of "manufacturing constraints" that will bump up operating costs. The company's CFO, Bill Keitel, told Reuters that demand has surpassed availability so much that the company has "decided to start spending more money to get more supply as soon as possible."Keitel also noted that this shortage is draining the company of tens of millions of dollars.

iPhone 5 gets more, faster memory, says report

iPhone 5 gets more, faster memory, says report
The iPhone 5 sports 1GB of system memory, twice the amount of the iPhone 4S, a chip review site claims. And it's faster too, said Anandtech in a post on Saturday. "Roughly 33 percent more peak memory bandwidth than the iPhone 4S, which can definitely help feed the faster [graphics processing unit] and drive the higher resolution display," Anandtech said. So, how does Anandtech know this?Apple did not hide the markings (see image above) at the Wednesday event, which revealed a Samsung -- manufacturer of the A6 -- part number. We'll know for sure that it's a 1GB part, or not, when somebody takes apart the iPhone 5 and looks at the chip markings in a shipping product. That said, these markings are essentially the same data that is revealed in a teardown. The iPhone 5's memory speed falls between the iPhone 4/4S and the third-generation Retina iPad, according to Anandtech.Anandtech

Report- Apple tablet could earn $3 billion in a year

Report: Apple tablet could earn $3 billion in a year
Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital estimates that Apple will sell each tablet for $600, according to an AppleInsider report. At that price, the "base case" scenario of 5 billion units sold during the first year would bring Apple an additional $2.8 billion in revenue.Of course, we all know how important price is these days, when launching a new product, so Abramsky gave a couple of other scenarios to consider. If Apple sells the tablet for $800, Apple would see $777 million in revenue for the sale of 1 million units. You can see the trend here--as the price goes up, the predicted number of units sold goes down."Anticipation for an Apple tablet (expected January 27) resembles that of Moses bringing down the 10 Commandments," Abramsky wrote in a research note, reprinted on AppleInsider. "Despite high expectations, we believe that Apple plans to redefine portable computing--as the Mac redefined the PC--by 'creating' desire for a new converged portable device with innovative touch/gestures [and] iTunes content. A 'hit' could provide a possible new growth engine for Apple."Rumors surrounding the tablet have hit fever pitch since the company announced its event on January 27, but few other than Apple CEO Steve Jobs really know what it will be yet. Expectations of a larger-looking iPod Touch with the ability to read magazines and newspapers, as well as watching video and listening to music, seem to be the consensus among the most popular current rumors.Be sure to come back to CNET at 10 a.m. PT Wednesday, when we'll be covering the Apple event live.

Not much music at Macworld 2008

Not much music at Macworld 2008
iTunesgot a major update, but it wasn't related to music--rather, Apple introduced movie rentals starting at $2.99. The biggest limitation seems to be the requirement to finish the movie within 24 hours of starting it--contrast this with Netflix, which gives you physical DVD rentals and 6,000 on-demand movies over the Internet without any time limit, starting at $4.99 per month. Apple TV is also becoming a much more interesting product, with no personal computer required to rent movies direct from iTunes. (Netflix and LG announced a similar product on Jan. 2, but it looks like the revamped Apple TV will get to market first.) And the MacBook Air is sure to inspire gadget lust in all but the most resistant tech consumers. It wouldn't have made much sense for Apple to introduce a new iPod, given that its latest line up just came out in September, and DRM-free music on iTunes is reportedly being held up in negotiations with the record labels. So, with plenty of other news to announce, music took a back seat this year. Also: 4 million iPhones sold. That's a great start for Apple, but it'll be interesting to hear whether iPhone+iPod sales in the December quarter grew as fast as iPod sales did from '05 to '06, or whether the law of large numbers is starting to kick in.

Kid Rock comes to Rhapsody

Kid Rock comes to Rhapsody
His latest album, Rock and Roll Jesus has not only sold more than 2 million albums, but has continued to sell lots of copies long past its release date--this week, nearly a year after release, it's still at No. 7. That's almost unprecedented in this day and age, when top-selling pop artists (think Mariah Carey) sell hundreds of thousands of albums in their first week then plummet off the charts. Why the staying power? Some argue it's because the hit single from the album, All Summer Long (which is basically a reworking of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama") hasn't been available as a digital download on iTunes or anywhere else. If you want to own the song, the only way to get it has been to buy the full CD. That changes today: you can now download the entire Rock and Roll Jesus album--and Kid Rock's entire catalog if you're so inclined--through the Rhapsody MP3 store. The albums are also available to Rhapsody subscribers. You still can't buy the single on its own, as Kid Rock considers himself an album artist and wants you to hear the full package. And still no iTunes, as Apple frowns on album-only sales. It'll be interesting to see if digital availability has any impact on sales, or whether fans keep preferring the CD.

iPhone 4 signal bar software fix now out

iPhone 4 signal bar software fix now out
Apple made good on its promise of a software update for the iPhone 4. On Thursday the company released iOS 4.0.1, an update to the iPhone's operating system that was introduced just over three weeks ago.The update contains bug fixes and improvements for "the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display." iOS 4.0.1 is compatible only with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4.This is the update that two weeks ago Apple said was coming. In an open letter at that time, Apple said that the problem some people are having with reception and bandwidth dropping off when gripping the iPhone 4 in a certain way is linked to software that incorrectly displays the phone's signal bars. The update was promised to make the signal bars display more accurately and more clearly. Apple released a beta version of iOS 4.1to developers only on Wednesday that also appeared to include the same restructured formula for displaying signal strength bars. It's not clear, however, that thesignal bar display has anything to do with the iPhone 4's much-discussed antenna "death grip" issue. The antenna problem appears to be hardware-related (the antenna is integrated into the metal strip running around the exterior of the phone), and whether the signal bars are displaying incorrectly wouldn't affect whether a call is actually dropped or a signal is lost. We'll know more on Friday, when Apple is planning to hold a press conference further addressing the iPhone 4.

How to turn your iPhone into a keyboard and mouse

How to turn your iPhone into a keyboard and mouse
The ultimate Internet-connected TV accessory isn't Roku. It's not Apple TV, and it's not Boxee. It's something you probably already own: a computer. With an inexpensive cable (like this one for Mac), you can mirror your computer on your television, giving you complete access to any Internet streaming services or local content on your hard drive. Many newer laptops even include HDMI out, giving you full 1080p mirroring. Older machines would have to rely on DVI or VGA out with an accompanying audio-out cable. But once you hook up your computer to your TV, the setup can be cumbersome.TouchMouse, a free iOS app, lets you control your computer (and in turn, your TV) from a distance, giving you the freedom to surf the Web from your couch. The application can also be used as a PowerPoint remote when giving a presentation.Connect your computer to Wi-Fi and download the Touch Mouse Server on your computer (PC or Mac) from Logitech.com/touchmouse.Connect your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi hot spot and download the Touch Mouse app (iTunes link). When the app launches, your computer will be listed. Tap to select it.Now you're ready to control your computer with your iPhone.
